Hostgator VS DreamHost

DreamHost vs Hostgator: it may be the most asked question of the shared web hosting industry. When you compare Hostgator versus DreamHost on customer service, many customers praise both companies. It may be more subjective to argue customer service between. As far as blunders, there was the Dreamhost billing error a few years ago in which DreamHost accidentilly billed millions of dollars and their intial apology caused more problems than it solved. Since then, the internet has been slightly less favourable it seems to DreamHost, but overall remains relatively positive. Hostgator on the other hand, has an almost cult status in the webmaster community: Hostgator is constantly praised for their customer service. Hostgator CEO Brent Oxley has also inspired much of the web, having started his business from a dorm room to turn it into one of the largest web hosting companies in the world.

Hostgator also is reputable for being generous in the amount of CPU and RAM usage they will tolerate. All web hosting services may claim “unlimited” but ultimately will suspend users who use too much computer resources such as CPU or RAM. DreamHost has a mixed reputation on this issue, but is notable for offering many other features to their users.

As far as price, Hostgator and DreamHost seem about even. Hostgator has a few plans that are cheaper than DreamHost’s, but a few that are more expensive as well. Hostgator does allow a month-to-month billing service without a fee to setup, which is very convenient. DreamHost charges $50 if you want to pay month to month, which sort of defeats the purpose (as you’ll lose the money you’re trying to save).

Overall,  Hostgator is better than DreamHost on a few points: customer service and price. Hostgator’s growth rate exceeds all of their major competitors, DreamHost included. So in this round of Hostgator vs DreamHost:  Hostgator wins!
